LANSING—Sen. Dale Zorn on Tuesday reminded Michigan and Ohio residents that Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 14-15, mark the first of two free fishing weekends in Michigan this year. The summer weekend is scheduled for June 13-14.
“Michigan offers a two weekends every year when residents and out-of-state visitors can enjoy Michigan’s world-class fishing – at no charge,” said Zorn, R-Ida. “Monroe County is the Walleye Capital of the World, and the free fishing weekends provide an excellent opportunity for families to introduce the joy of fishing to children.
“This weekend is also a chance for even the most experienced angler to try winter fishing for the first time.”
During the weekend, all fishing license fees will be waived, but all fishing regulations still apply.
Michigan offers some of the finest freshwater fishing in the world, with more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, more than 11,000 inland lakes and 36,350 miles of rivers and streams.

Zorn noted the website also includes information about ice fishing. An article titled “Fishing Technique: Ice Fishing, The Coolest Sport Around” is located under “Related Resources” and features good safety advice and basics on getting started and commonly used equipment.
“I encourage all area anglers – and those who have never gone fishing – to take advantage of this free weekend and have fun doing one of our state’s premier outdoor activities,” Zorn said.
